The cartouche is an oblong enclosure with a vertical line at one end, indicating that the text enclosed is a royal name. It derived from a shen ring which was a circular enclosure with a vertical line at one end, it was the egyptian symbol for eternity and infinity. So of course egyptian royalty couldnt resist stretching it and adding their name in.

Then again on either side of the scarab beetle he is depicted with the body of a human and the head of the falcon.
