This fantastic and unique pendant is one of a brand new range of designs available exclusively to Spiral.

The word gargoyle is derived from an old French 'gargouille' meaning throat, refering to their original function of keeping rain water off catherdrals in Medieval Europe. Gargoyles came into gothic architecture in the early 13th century. Gargoyles, also known as grotesques, in churches and cathedrals, also held the adiditional function of warding off evil spirits. Although commissioned to work in a Christian environment, many of the stone masons still held pagan folk beliefs common to all peasant folk of the time, and these beliefs are often reflected in their work.

This pendant is a replica of an original gargoyle design found in Gothic architecture.

This is a very traditional gargoyle design, with a gaping mouth out of which rain water would have spouted, keeping the church from harm.

Size 5cm (including pendant loop) by 3.5cm, supplied with a presentation box and descriptive card. Supplied on a length of tough waxed cord or, for a little extra, an 18" steel chain.

It depicts a horned, hooded creature pulling a humourously grotesque face, a design sometimes called the "Monk of Mephisto," or "Monk of Mephistopheles." Depicting a horned monk in this way reflects the sly, irreverent humour of the medieval masons, as well as their pagan beliefs.

The werewolf was a powerful symbol in pagan beliefs, as it represented the strength and the spirit of the wolf within the body of a man.
